The coconut you get in the grocery store is nothing like a coconut on a tree. There is a thick thick layer of woody stuff around the coconut that has to be chopped off first. They take these massive knives and just start hacking away with their other hand on the coconut. I always cringe because it looks like they're going to chop their fingers off!

However, apparently they are born with a knive in their hands, so they manage to keep their fingers.
